Anyone who knows me well knows that if given a choice contemporary romance is not my preferred cup of tea. That said if you give me a story with a hook, in this case a mystery that breaks apart two soul mates, I'm probably gonna go for it! What can I say? I'm also a HUGE sap, seriously!The story of Sam and Lil is a tale easily described as the things people who love each other do when they are hurting and don't even realize it. They push away their partners, their friends, even their family when they need them most. What is not so easily described is the full impact of those choices and the repercussions they have in their lives.

Poor Lil!! After rebuilding herself from the ruins of heartbreak, her tidy, well organized life is thrown for a loop when she is asked to help her ex, Sam, recover his memories after a head trauma. Complicating matters is the fact that she obviously she has to come to terms with the fact that doing this might cause the truth of their break up to finally come to light as well as kissing her secretly longed for chances for happiness goodbye.
What follows is a careful dance between two wounded people. There is obviously a big problem that everyone is tiptoeing around and this drives the story as both Sam and Lil renegotiate a relationship that was severely damaged by strong emotion and misunderstanding. Sam has a rough road, reexamining his life through a not so flattering lens as he works to unravel the reasons for the haunted look in Lil's eyes and the unforgiving stares of his best friends. Lil on the other hand is trying to do the right thing and hopes to come out with her heart intact as she revisits feelings better left buried.
Second Rate Chances ends on a uplifting, and 'obvious' note. Obvious because we know that if two people get a second chance to work their way back to a place of happiness, they can build happy, new memories on top of the old, painful ones and most of all learn that you should always appreciate that the ones you love the most are the ones you should never push away!

I read this book in a day. I thought it was pretty good. I didn't like seeing the bad reviews on here. I think this is Stehpens debut novel and I think she did a fine job. This was not your typical romance story full of sex. This was about love, heartbreak and longing. This was a true romance. Love does concur all. If you try to make this book into what YOU want to be then maybe YOU should try writing a book yourself. Sam and Lil I hope have a very happily ever after.
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. The writing flowed, the characters were well-developed, and my interest was held. I had a hard time putting it down when I had to. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to read something that's emotional, but not gut wrenching. I wouldn't recommend this to a reader that can't stand when a mc makes poor decisions. That isn't a problem for me. I just sort of yell at the character or shake my head at them. I know for some people, it can totally ruin the book. I think that Holly Stephens is a very talented writer and I can't wait to read more of her work.
Actually I thought this book was pretty well written. Yeah, there were some errors that should have been taken care of with simple editing, but for the most part they didn't distract from the story. What bothered me most was the emotional dishonesty. Rule number one when writing a book is.....just because it's written, doesn't make it believable. ALWAYS, and I do mean always, ask yourself if this happened to you, could you believe it. I won't give spoilers but I will say that this story line was just too implausible. A shame because this really was a pretty engaging plot, and had the author fleshed out a few of the events and looked at the plot line with a little more realistic point of view, it could have been on my " favorites list". As it stands now, I'm just left feeling let down and unsatisfied. Humph.....I really hate that feeling.
This isn't a terrible book, but I take off points for grammatical errors and lack of proofreading. Also, some things didn't make sense. The reasoning behind the whole downfall of this relationship is weak.

You wait 60% of the book to find out why these two couldn't work it out and then it ends up being over a miscarriage when they only knew she was pregnant for about 12 seconds. I understand that it's hard stuff to take, I've been there and much further along, but seriously I feel like there should have been more to it. I kept thinking there would be complication with the miscarriage any that her health couldn't support another pregnancy.... I don't know. It just didn't seem that these two put forth ANY effort at all. Maybe just give it up....
I also didn't understand why Sam, after recalling his memories, continued on with wedding plans. What a jerk. So his fiancee wasn't the nicest person? Still, why screw everyone over? Why not immediately got to Lil and make up. Why wait 4 days? Why not tell Chloe straight up you won't marry her. I didn't think her actions warranted that response. She didn't really come off as a vindictive, malicious person. Sam displaces almost all of the blame. He just seems foolish. If I were lil and saw him in his wedding tuxedo, I would think he got awfully close to walking down to the alter.... with another woman!
The book is a decent read and has a good start on a strong storyline, it just falls short for me.
The author should also note that the story of Samson and Delilah is anything but a love story as the last line implies. It's a story about gullibility and betrayal. Samson is never loved by Delilah, he is deceived by her, and dies a terrible and untimely death at the hands of his enemies because of her.
