This book provides everything you need to know to consider a career change and then to make the change a reality. I love the way the book is organized, it takes you through the thought processes and questions you might have if you’re thinking about a career change, and then shares actual stories of people who have made these sorts of changes and ends with really actionable tools and a blueprint to make it happen for yourself.I felt like the author was speaking directly to me when she was sharing the questions I would ask during a career change, and the stages that someone goes through. 10 years ago I made a big career pivot from corporate to consulting work, and so much of what the author talks about with our identity being wrapped up in our career, would have been so helpful for me to have had during that change. I also love the approach to having a plan, but to also being open to what comes, and the suggestion that the plan provides a rough guide to keep us out of overwhelm, but we will pick up additional information so our plan might take some twists, turns and detours – but without some sort of plan – it’s almost too much to consider making a career change. And that is exactly why I love this book – it really does step you through every piece you need.
The stories of individuals who made changes really made the book come to life for me, I could relate to many of the stories highlighted and I loved how the author spent time pinpointing parts of the journey, like the moment they knew they needed to make a change, it just provides such great insight into the stages you’ll likely go through
I can’t recommend this book enough, and even if you aren’t considering a career change now, I think this is great reading for anyone – it plants some critical seeds about how we think about work, how others do/don’t support us, and reasons you maybe should be thinking about a change in the future. There are some amazingly awesome ‘life nuggets’ and words of wisdom that I took away about career in general that are great. I just loved it!!!!

I read a lot of leadership books and few stand out to me like this book written by Lou Blaser. Lou provides both strategic and tactical advice and it comes from her own personal experiences as well as from others who have successfully made changes in their lives. Lou lays out a roadmap for success and she does so in a way that makes you think about change in a new way – a way that motivates you to take action. Through her writing, she lets you know that you are not alone in your struggles to make needed changes in your life. In fact, you are surrounded by people with the same desires. What I found so impactful was that her description of all of the phases that each of us go through as we contemplate change and act (or not act) was so accurate that it made me laugh out loud. How did she get in my head?
Lou is an engaging and witty writer and I found myself using my highlighter non-stop because her words were so powerful and rang so true to me. I have a shelf in my library that is dedicated to books that I love (and read more than once) and Break Free is prominently displayed. Whether you need to make a professional or personal change, Break Free is a must read! I know what all my friends are getting for gifts this year!
Excellent book for anyone who feels stuck, unfulfilled in their work. How do you leave the safe shores of your well-paid high-status corporate job and set off to do your own thing?! The author encourages you to break free, using both head and heart to make your decision.
Change is scary. But the author reminds you that staying stuck has its own risks. Who do you want to be? Don't wait until you are completely miserable to make a change. The book is filled with stories and anecdotes of people who have faced their fear and made the leap. If you are looking for encouragement to take a leap into self-employment or a creative endeavor, this is the book for you!
Money and status aren't the only ways to measure success. Be who you want to be.
If you are stuck in your career and need a new pathway (up OR out), this book is a really good starting point. The author has already been down this road, and her compelling style and story will captivate you on every page. No matter what your "stuckness" looks like, Lou Blaser sees you. This is not a unicorns and glitter approach, either. Since the author dug herself out of the wrong career path and put herself onto the right one, she gets it on a visceral level. Some of the observations and advice will challenge you, and that's a good thing.
This is a wonderful book not only for those who know they need a career change, but also for anyone who is just a little bit curious about how their life could be different and more fulfilling by making a change. Much of what the author writes about goes above and beyond just your career, her advice and tips can be applied to many aspects of your life to become a happier, more satsified person.
The way in which the author speaks and writes is motivating and makes the reader want to do something about making whatever change it is they need to make, and also makes the reader believe that they can do it. It is very well written and fun to read, not at all stuffy and dull like most career guides. The real life examples, experiences and antecdotes are relevant and relatable, and the blueprint and steps she outlines to to help get you where you need to go are practical and achievable. This was a great read!
