It is a reference book and beginners should look for other easier sources to start with. He presupposes that the reader knows at least three languages besides English: Latin, Greek and German. Sometimes he quotes at length from Latin and does not offer a translation. The reader should have a Greek and English New Testament ( Mounce's translation is helpful ).Charles Hodge is deep and goes profoundly into the epistle but he is rewarding . For example, when he treats the definition of faith.
One thing that the reader has to become totally aware of is his need to get in the right side of God. The epistle is all about creating the right standing with God. This is priority number one in the life of a person.
Since the time we are born, we are immersed in a Greek education. You have to learn to handle the computer now days better than even learning to brush your teeth. Why? because your future depends on the computer. And relationships? Better learn all about ipods,iphones.etc.
Why do you go to school? So that, when you get out,you get a good job and get ahead. And even,ultimately, what about morals? Yes. There is the common good.
Charles Hodge says not to all that. First, learn to get right with God and all those other things will come imperceptibly. And how to get right? Well, he analyzes, it is nothing that you do. That is right. Nothing that you do is meritorious in God,s eyes. All is empty rags. Your best intentions, your best deeds, your best denials of evil. God is the card dealer in this hand. He only accepts one sacrifice and that sacrifice is the one He presented in the cross, by sacrificing His only begotten Son, Christ the Lord. Now, all one person has to do is to accept Christ by faith as to the only solution to get in good standing with God. That is why it is so important to understand what faith is. It is to know first what is demanded of you by God; after understanding to trust that God is true and giving the right proposition to be in good standing with Him; then to trust that He is fair and will handle a person according to His word and then, that there are results to that faith that you have to show in your daily life.
But, that the whole thing is fantastic, it is. The person reaches an invulnerable position where nothing touches him/her. Not even death can separate a person from God. Much less starvation,suffering, depth, length or even the intervention of evil forces.
That is Charles Hodge interpreting Romans.

Hodge's commentary on Romans gets 5 stars. The version gets one, as it's almost unreadable. Not sure it's worth 99 cents.
Solid resource on the epistle to the Romans.
C.K. Barrett's books are must read's in almost all Seminary's. He is a true scholar who seeks the truth and the facts. If he has a theological bias, its not apparent. A must reference book for any biblical student.
Hodge was solid, and Romans is great.
I see comments in negative form about this book. What did you expect from Charles Hodge? I admit, its not perfect, but which writer is? Any negative comment surely came from a Hodge first time reader. He style is true across the board. Same as Spurgeon, Barclay, Henry..... For me, when I set down to read "Hodge" I have a collegiate dictionary at arms reach and a pencil for notes for his wording. Too much Greek translations? Ha!! If you don't translate the New Testament back to Greek, you're simply not studying New Testament.... My advice to Hodge readers, don't be in a hurry. Don't think of it an easy study. Its not. Be patient when you ask, "Where could he POSSIBLY be going with this?" Hodge, Spurgeon, Barclay.... each man touched from Heaven with a higher intellegence than most. I thank God these men set down and penned it all. When the Bible speaks of different "teachers, and HELPS" I am convinced Hodge was in the Lords mind. If you are looking for easy, unchallenging labor free reads, buy from the kiddy section next time. There you will find all of the superficial you can stand.
I am a pastor and am currently preaching through Romans 8, doing my own exegesis from the Greek text. I have worked through many commentaries on Romans and I have to say that I had very little expectation that this commentary would be helpful. I saw this commentary cited in the NICNT by Moo (I think Moo NICNT is the finest Romans commentary on the market today), found it in a library and started looking at it.
I was impressed when I learned that he taught Romans continually for 56 years at Princeton from 1820 something on. His commentary is far superior to many of the ones I own on Romans (I have maybe 20 or so). His exegesis is exceptionally mature, careful and interactive with other commentators. It reads like someone who has spent decades carefully studying the Greek text of Romans in some of the most crucial places. For example, his teaching on the concept of being 'in Christ' in Romans 81...(you know...there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus) reflects maturity of thought. He broke the categories of how we are in Christ into three categories that made me really think.
I think this sort of input comes only from a teacher who has gone over the text repeatedly for decades. You know the used copies are really cheap and his insight is superior in my opinion to Luther, Murray and many others out there.
At the same time, there are several commentaries on Romans that far surpass this one. Two that stand apart in my mind are Doug Moo's NICNT (see my review on his commentary) and Schreiner's BECNT. But if you can pick up Hodge on Romans for a few dollars his perspective is sometimes very interesting to read and definately worth owning in my view.
The commentary content is great, but the edition formatting is beyond terrible. It's almost as if they shot it with OCR, didn't bother proofing it, and published. Wrong words, random characters, spaces missing. It's to the point that it's actually difficult to read.
